Bolton Wanderers will throw their last dice for an automatic promotion slot when they travel to Peterborough United in League One this Saturday. Both sides have secured playoff positions but Bolton still have slim hopes for a top two finish. Fourth placed Peterborough are already braced for the playoffs, being six points behind second placed Derby County. Two losses in their last four league games cost them a chance at the top two and they have to contend with the playoffs. The most recent of those defeats came on Tuesday, when they fell 2-0 away to Cheltenham Town. That marked the second time they failed to score in four matches, after their earlier 5-0 defeat at Oxford United. It hasn’t been all gloomy though for Peterborough, they have five wins in seven matches ahead of this. While this run should give them confidence ahead of this encounter, they’ll want to leave their best for the playoffs. Peterborough haven't won any of their last three matches against Bolton, and there’s nothing much to gain by trying to win here.

The reverse meeting between these two sides in September ended 1-1. That was the first time in three meetings that Bolton failed to beat Peterborough. Bolton have three wins in the last four meetings between them. Heading into the final day of the regular season, the visitors are three points below the automatic promotion slot. Automatic promotion is out of their hands but remains a possibility. With an inferior goal difference, Bolton need to win comfortably and hope for a Derby County loss against relegated Carlisle United. Bolton are coming from a 2-0 win over Port Vale with goals from Aaron Collins and Cameron Jerome. The win was a good recovery from two straight draws, but came a little too late for their automatic promotion charge. The visitors are unbeaten in their last six matches but draws with Portsmouth and Shrewsbury Town at home may well have cost them a top two finish. They don’t have a great away run to carry here, but a 2-0 win over Bristol raises their hopes. That was their first away win in seven league matches.
