The first leg of the Europa Conference League round of 16 will see Greece's Olympiacos host the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv. This match is set to be played at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus on Thursday. Olympiacos finished third in their Europa League Group A and then defeated Ferencvaros in the knockout round play-off tie. They won 1-0, both home and away, as the Greeks are looking to make up for their disappointment in Europe, having failed to qualify from their Europa League group for the second successive year. The arrival of Spanish coach José Luis Mendilibar has improved their fortunes, and they have won their last seven matches in a row. That could be the tonic they need to overturn a poor record against Israeli clubs, as the Greeks have failed to win their last five such matches, drawing two and losing three. They do have form on their side, as the Red and Whites have won their last three home matches in European competitions.

Maccabi qualified for this stage of the competition as Group B winners, winning five and losing just once. They finished two points clear of Gent and will be looking to continue those positive vibes. Robbie Keane’s side is coming into this match on the back of four consecutive wins, where they scored at least three goals on three occasions. Incidentally, they have lost just once across their last 12 matches in all competitions and will be making sure they aren’t pushovers here. It is their away form against Greek clubs that needs a bit of mend, though, as Maccabi have lost four of their last five trips to Greece. This season, though, they have avoided defeat in five of their last six matches in this competition and will hope to break their Greek jinx.
