Top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic begins his ATP Tour Finals campaign against Casper Ruud. The other two players in this group are Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev. From 2016 onwards, Djokovic has won ten Grand Slam titles, including three this year. However in that period he has not won this tournament. His last win was in 2015 and that was his fourth straight ATP Tour Finals victory. Since then, he's lost in two finals in 2016 and 2018. He's had another hugely successful year, though he did fail to win the Olympics and the US Open. He bounced back to form with a win in the Paris Masters last week.

Casper Ruud has reached the ATP Tour Finals for the first time in his career. He only turned professional in 2015 but has been climbing the rankings this year. He's won five titles this year, though the first four of them were all on clay. His most recent win was in the San Diego Open, so he can win hard court titles. All the tournaments he has won this year have been at the 250 series level but he has had some good performances in higher level events. One target he'll have in 2022 is to reach his first ever Grand Slam quarter final. He's only had one previous match against his opponent with Djokovic winning in straight sets in Rome last year.
