Nigeria will have to improve on their recent form if they want to be a real challenger in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they open their tournament against underdogs Tanzania. This Group C match will be played on Tuesday, and our prediction is that the ‘Super Eagles’ and the ‘Taifa Stars’ are likely to produce a low-scoring game with under 2.5 goals predicted.
The Super Eagles are the defending runners-up and three-time winners in this competition, although their last win in this competition came back in 2013. Tanzania are making their third appearance in the last four editions of this competition, but they have never won a game in the finals of AFCON.
While that may not change here, Nigeria will hope they don’t drop points. With Tunisia and Uganda the other two teams in the group, the winner here will get a big boost in their push for a top-two finish. Can Nigeria live up to their favourites tag, or will Tanzania upset the odds? Find out more about our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

Nigeria - Tanzania: Form Analysis
Nigeria qualified by topping Group D of the AFCON qualifiers with an impressive record (W3, D2, L1). They had the best defensive record of conceding just three goals, and with only 12 goals in their six matches, Nigeria haven’t enticed fans.
The Super Eagles will be worried about their recent form, having failed to win any of their last three games during regular time (D1, L2). Those may have reduced the expectations, but Nigeria can set the ball rolling with a win here.
Nigeria won five of their last six AFCON group stage matches.
Tanzania had to win their last two matches of the AFCON qualifiers to finish second in Group H (W3, D1, L2) behind DR Congo. Their matches have also been low on excitement, with those six qualifiers producing only nine total goals, five scored and four conceded.
Recent form doesn’t increase the morale, as the Taifa Stars failed to win their last seven matches, including friendlies (D2, L5). That included four defeats in a row, so Tanzania will have to overturn that recent downturn to have any impact.

Nigeria & Tanzania Squad Analysis
The biggest talking point in the Nigerian camp is the absence of Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredrick, both not called up to the squad due to injuries. All eyes will be on star forward Victor Osimhen, who’s looking to add to his count of 31 international goals.
The Super Eagles have lined up in a 4-1-3-2 formation against Egypt in their latest match but may also use a 4-3-3 system to make the most of their forward line. Osimhen could lead their attack with Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze manning the flanks.
Lookman has three goals and one assist in the AFCON finals tournament in the last edition.
Tanzania appear to have no injuries at this stage as they look to make the most of Nigeria’s absences. That they still don’t have a great record in this tournament history weighs heavy, though.
It’s usually the 4-1-4-1 formation that Tanzania favours, and they may line up in the same way in this match. Kelvin John could be the lone forward, while the four-man midfield will look for inspiration from Charles M’Mombwa, who scored twice and added an assist in Tanzania’s last match.
Nigeria - Tanzania Key Points
- Five of Nigeria’s last eight matches produced fewer than three goals during regular time.
- Nigeria’s six matches in the qualifiers averaged 2.0 goals per game.
- Tanzania haven’t scored in six of their last eight AFCON matches.
- Eight of Tanzania’s last ten matches saw under 2.5 goals.
- Tanzania averaged 1.5 goals per game in the six AFCON qualifiers.
- The last four matches between these sides saw fewer than three goals, although the last of those was played in 2016.

Our Nigeria vs Tanzania Prediction
Nigeria missed adding to their list of AFCON titles last season when they were beaten finalists to Ivory Coast. They haven’t won this competition in the last 12 years and couldn’t have asked for a more favourable start. The expectations are low considering their recent defeats to D.R. Congo and Egypt. Tanzania may look to make the most of this situation, but they haven’t performed in the finals.
Tanzania have struggled for goals in this competition’s history, and our Nigeria vs Tanzania prediction is less than 2.5 goals.
Nigeria vs Tanzania - Other Interesting Predictions
Ademola Lookman to score anytime
Ademola Lookman has three goals and one assist to his name in the last edition of the AFCON finals. That assist came in their opening game of the competition, and Lookman will look to improve on that record. Nigeria’s hopes may rest on his shoulders, so back him to net here.
