Niger and Madagascar’s quests to win their first ever continental title ended at the semi finals of the African Nations Championship. The two will now face off in the third place playoff with both nations already having set a new record in this competition. Before this edition, Niger’s best performance was getting to the quarter finals, in 2011. Niger had an outing to forget as they suffered the biggest defeat in this edition, falling 5-0 at the hands of hosts Algeria. It was the first time in the competition that they conceded and it was heavy. This was also the first time their match in this competition produced over 2.5 goals and it was the second time they failed to score in this competition.

Madagascar are coming from a 1-0 loss to Senegal, which was also their first defeat at this competition. It marked the first time in their four matches that they failed to score. An early goal from Pape Diallo ensured their first ever appearance at this competition would not see them reach the final but Madagascar will take a lot of pride in their run thus far. Prior to that loss, they have three wins and have scored two or more goals in each of the matches. They will still pose an attacking threat here, while they look to improve on a run of just one clean sheet in four matches.
