Newport County vs Manchester United Prediction & Betting Tips - FA Cup

by Ian John | in FA Cup Prediction

Newport County face Manchester United in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Sunday. Rodney Parade will be packed to the rafters as the Welsh League Two minnows host one of the biggest clubs in world football. A place in the last 16 of the competition awaits the winner and Manchester United will have to be wary as Newport have found the net at home against five of six Premier League opponents in cup competitions in recent times. United though were last year's beaten finalists in this competition, losing 2-1 to Manchester City at Wembley, and they will certainly be focused on performing well in the FA Cup once again.

Newport County - Manchester United: Form Analysis

Newport County have never played Manchester United before, but they have proven to be a tough team to beat for Premier League opponents. Over the last decade or so, the Welsh side have faced six Premier League opponents at home, scoring against five of them, and securing a draw (and a replay) in four others. Manager Graham Coughlan has led his team to 14th in the League Two table, but their recent form suggests better things ahead with the Exiles unbeaten in their last seven games, winning four and drawing three. Newport reached the Fourth Round after beating Oldham Athletic 2-0, then beating Barnet 4-1 after a 1-1 draw in their first second round tie. They then overcame Eastleigh, once again with a 3-1 win in a replay after a 1-1 draw.

Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United team sits 8th in the Premier League and have lost nine games already this season in that competition. However, they have drawn just two games this season, one at home, one away, which suggests its been a feast or famine for United fans following their favorites. The Red Devils form has been patchy all season long, and their record of 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in their last six games in all competitions exemplifies this. Scoring goals on the road has been a real problem with just 9 in 10 games in the Premier League. They did manage two in their 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic in the Third Round of the competition though and over the years, United have a very good record against lower league opponents in the FA Cup, even if they have been struggling in their league campaign.

Erik ten Hag has described this FA Cup trip as a 'nightmare' for United as they are expected to win and win well against a tricky opponent, who also have found good form of late. County were also boosted by the news that Huw Jenkins has taken over as chairman. The former Swansea City chairman took over as chairman of the club once his purchase was ratified last week.

Newport County & Manchester United Squad Analysis

Newport boss Graeme Coughlan will have an almost fully fit squad available for the game. Young center back Josh Seberry is not far away from a return from a broken arm, but it may be February before he is back in contention to play. Omar Bogle could miss out, which has seen County move into the transfer market to sign Wales U21 forward Luke Jephcott on a free transfer from St. Johnstone. He is expected to go straight into the squad for Sunday's game.

Manchester United will be without a number of players for this game. Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat are away on African Cup of Nations duty, while defenders Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia will all be absent. Anthony Martial should be fit after an illness last week, while on the positive side of things, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount are both close to a return to first team action. Alejandro Garnacho will likely be the man to watch for United after being one of their best players over the course of the current campaign.

Newport County - Manchester United Key Points

  1. Newport and their opponents combine for an average of 3.21 goals per Newport home game in League Two this season.
  2. The League Two side have lost just twice at home this season, winning six, drawing six.
  3. Manchester United's four away wins have come against teams in the bottom half of the EPL table (Fulham, Everton, Burnley and Sheffield United)
  4. Man Utd's only away win since the 29th November came in their 2-0 win over Wigan in the Third Round of the FA Cup.
  5. Newport have drawn at home with Brentford, Newcastle, Brighton and Tottenham in recent years. They have lost to Man City (1-4) and West Ham (0-2) over that time too.

Our Newport County vs Manchester United Prediction

With no history between the two clubs, all we can go on is their general form and performances in recent times against similar levels of opposition. That suggests Newport are going to give this struggling United team a bit of a torrid time in the compact but atmospheric confines of Rodney Parade. United's record against lower league teams though is pretty good and their best away performances have come against lower ranked Premier League opponents. I think that extra quality will be key. Our prediction for Newport v Manchester United is for United to scrape the win, but both teams to score.

Newport County vs Manchester United - Other Interesting Predictions

Correct Score - Manchester United to win 2-1

Evidence shows that Newport County have proven a very tough team to beat at home this season. They have drawn both their last two home games in the FA Cup and scored in five of their last six home games against Premier League opponents, losing just two. Erik Ten Hag will know his team will be in a real game on Sunday but I think their extra quality in attack can see them through, even if they leave it late. As United don't score too many, and Newport do tend to score one against EPL opponents, our prediction for a 2-1 win for Manchester United is a good one here.

Scott McTominay (Manchester United) to score at any time

Although linked with a move away from the club regularly over the last 12 months, Scott McTominay has played a key role in central midfield in many games and has often been the player to score the key goal. He will likely start in midfield with Ten Hag likely to rest some key players and he has scored six goals in 24 games this season for United and he played the full 90 minutes at Wigan in the previous round. He's averaging a goal every 3 games this season and hasn't scored in his last six, so he could be overdue another.

Newport and Manchester United have never met previously in any competition, but Manchester United were instrumental in saving Newport County almost 50 years ago.

United were one of a number of teams who agreed to play a friendly game to raise funds to save Newport County as the Welsh club was in danger of folding back in 1976.

Playing against a South Wales XI that featured players from Swansea City, Cardiff City and Newport County, Manchester United boss Tommy Docherty picked a team including several full internationals such as Lou Macari, Steve Coppell and Sammy McIlroy.

The game raised £8,000 - enough to save Newport financially - but it was the South Wales Xi that won the game winning 1-0.
