The supremely talented Russian 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva will face Serbia's Olga Danilovic in the first semi-final of the UniCredit Iasi 250 tournament in Romania. It promises to be an excellent match between two players that are in excellent form, especially on clay, and it is one that is tricky to make a prediction on given the wealth of positive data about the two players.
Top-seed Andreeva has had an outstanding year on clay so far and a short and fruitless season on grass. In April, she reached the quarterfinal in Rouen and Madrid, and despite losing in the first round in Rome, she produced a stunning run at Roland Garros, reaching the semi-final before losing to Jasmine Paolini. She took some time off after her first-round defeats at Bad Homburg and Wimbledon before coming back in Iasi.
In Romania, she beat Noma Noha Akugue 6-1, 6-2, Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-1, 6-3, and Lea Boskovic 6-2, 6-0 in her last match to progress into the semi-final. She has won 15 of her last 19 on clay and is the clear bookmakers' favourite to progress into the final.
However, her opponent Olga Danilovic won't be a pushover. The Serbian left-hander also had a fantastic French Open coming through three rounds of qualifying and then reached the fourth round in the main draw., She defeated two seeds before losing narrowly to Marketa Vondrousova. She came through qualifying at Wimbledon but lost in the first round and her return to clay also saw her lose in the first round in Budapest last week.
But in Romania, she has been excellent, defeating fourth seed Anna Blinkova 6-2. 5-7, 6-1, then Anca Alexia Todoni 6-1, 6-1 and most recently Anna Bondar 7-5, 6-2, avenging her loss in Hungary last week to the same player.
The winner will earn a spot in the final against either Chloe Paquet or the winner of the Jaqueline Cristian vs Elina Avanesyan quarterfinal.
