10th-place Minnesota United will look to claw their way back into the playoff picture when they host Western Conference leaders St. Louis City on Saturday. It’s been a disastrous few weeks for Minnesota who have fallen completely out of the playoff picture. They’re coming off back-to-back defeats and a four match winless run. This has them sitting 10th, trailing ninth-place Dallas by one point and seventh-place San Jose by three. The MLS incorporated a “play-in” similar to the NBA which will see ninth and eighth-place play a one off game to decide the final playoff spot. Minnesota might have to rely on the play-in for a spot in the postseason but will quickly have to get wins on the board. They’re coming off a wild 4-3 away loss to LA Galaxy which saw the Loons leading 3-1 heading into the final half-hour of play. Three unanswered goals for the Galaxy doomed Minnesota to a potentially decisive loss.

St. Louis City have defied all odds so far this season and they continue to surprise week after week. The new expansion team playing its first season in the MLS was supposed to struggle by all accounts. However, some shrewd signings and a brilliant coaching job by manager Bradley Carnell has City sitting atop the pile in the West. They hold a five point lead over second-place Seattle with four games remaining on their schedule. St. Louis City will set their sights on ending the season strongly as they prepare for a run at the MLS Cup. However, their form has begun to waver in recent weeks. They’ve now seen their last three league fixtures end in draws and are currently on a run of only one win in their last six. Carnell’s men will have to be at their best here as they have seen their results take a massive dip when playing on the road.
