Middlesbrough vs Sunderland Prediction & Betting Tips - Championship
by Ian John | in Championship Prediction
Middlesbrough host Sunderland in a Tees-Wear derby at midday on Sunday in the UK, hoping that they can repeat their 4-0 success at the Stadium of Light back in October. That game saw Sunderland reduced to ten men just before half-time, with Middlesbrough taking full advantage to score four unanswered goals in the second half. Boro's recent form since then has been a little patchy, something manager Michael Carrick will have to improve if they are to force their way into the playoff picture over the coming weeks. With their game with Birmingham postponed last weekend, Boro haven't played since their 6-1 Carabao Cup Semi Final 2nd leg loss to Chelsea. Additionally, their league form heading into the Sunderland game isn't great with two defeats, two wins and one draw in their last five Championship games. Goals have proven hard for Boro to come by at home with just 15 scored (and the same number conceded) in their 14 home league games this season.
Sunderland may lie above Middlesbrough in the table, but the Black Cats form of late has not been particularly impressive either. Manager Michael Beale has made some moves in the January transfer window to rectify that. Alex Pritchard has left the club to join Birmingham City and Jay Matete joined Oxford United on loan. Coming into the club is Callum Styles, who joined on loan from Barnsley. Sunderland also fought off a bid from Lazio for their exciting winger Jack Clarke during January and that should keep their playoff hopes alive. The visitors have won just two of their last six in all competitions, but did get back to winning ways last weekend with a 3-1 home win over Stoke City. They will certainly want payback after their 0-4 loss at home to Middlesbrough earlier this season but they have won just one of the last 9 against today's opponents, losing seven, and their last win in the league at the Riverside came back in September 2005 (A 2-0 win).
