Mexico kick off their pursuit of the Gold Cup trophy when they take on Honduras in the first group stage match at the NRG Stadium in Houston. El Tri have been made to suffer two final defeats to the United States in the previous three editions of this competition. It has led to a strong squad being named for this tournament while other nations, such as the United States and Canada, have left their best players at home. Following a heavy 3-0 loss to the USA in the semi-finals of the Nations League, Mexico salvaged some pride by defeating Panama 1-0 in the third-place match. However, the failure to make the final in the Nations League ultimately cost former manager Diego Cocca his job. Mexico are now under the leadership of caretaker manager Jaime Lozano, who coached the national team to third-place at the 2021 Olympics. Mexico come into this match having lost only once in their last eight although an additional three of those matches finished in draws.

Honduras appear to be going through something of a transition as their older players are beginning to phase out of the team. They suffered a horrendous World Cup qualifying campaign which saw them lose 10 of their 14 games and fail to register a win. Since then, Honduras finished second in their Nations League group with two wins and two defeats. Their most recent outing resulted in a 1-0 loss to Venezuela in a friendly match, representing the second consecutive loss for the team. Honduras have lost four of their last six overall and have failed to find the net in three of those matches. To make matters worse, they will be without key attacking player and captain Romell Quioto. The Montreal CF forward has 63 caps for his country and has found the net 13 times on the international stage.
