Gaels Monfils has fond memories of the US Open. The Frenchman reached the semi-finals here in 2016 when losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic. He has also reached a French Open semi-final but that was 11 years ago. Since that last four appearance here three years ago, Monfils has failed to make it past the fourth round in his next 11 Grand Slam events. That has all changed this past week as Monfils has won four matches without beating a seeded player. He had problems in his third round match as he had to go to five sets to beat Dennis Shapovalov.

Matteo Berrettini had never made it past the first round at Flushing Meadow before this tournament. His best performance in a Grand Slam was reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon this year before losing to Roger Federer and only winning five games. He also has made it to the last eight without facing a seeded opponent. He lost a set in each of his first three rounds, before defeating Andrey Rublev in straight sets.  Monfils has more experience than his opponent and that will help him get the win in this match.
