Aleksandar Kovacevic makes his third successive Indian Wells appearance and will take on fellow unseeded player Matteo Arnaldi in the first round. The winner of their second career meeting will then play seventh seed Andrey Rublev for a place in the third round. Below is our prediction for this match.

Matteo Arnaldi has returned to Indian Wells after his main draw debut last season. He finished in the second round then.

Arnaldi's slow start to the season could cost him in Palm Springs. The Italian has lost half of his last 10 matches. He is coming off a first-round exit in Acapulco and starts his campaign this week 36th in the live ranking.

Aleksandar Kovacevic lost to Arnaldi in their first career meeting, two seasons ago in Toronto. As he is having a stronger season than Arnaldi, Kovacevic will be confident of tying this series at 1-1.

The American has won 14 times in 20 outings thus far. This impressive form has resulted in a runner-up finish in Montpellier and a challenger title in Oeiras.

Lately, however, Kovacevic has struggled, managing just one win from his last four fixtures. The world number 94 is coming off a qualifying round exit in Acapulco.

Kovacevic has never progressed past the first round at Indian Wells and is seeking to avoid a third successive first-round loss.
