12th seeded Diego Schwartzmann faces unseeded Marton Fucsovics in the Monte Carlo Masters second round. The winner of this match is likely to face sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last 16. Schwartzmann is world ranked 16, which is 41 places above his opponent. The Argentinian has slipped three places in the rankings this year. He began 2022 well with a couple of wins in the ATP Cup, including beating Stefanos Tsitsipas, the defending champion in this event. Schwartzmann lost in the second round of the Australian Open before returning to South America for their clay court tournaments. He did well with a quarter final before losing to Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz in the Buenos Aires and Rio de Janiero finals. He has struggled on hard courts but should be more at home back on clay and has made the last eight of the French Open three times in the last four years with one semi-final appearance. The first round saw him with a tough draw against Karen Khachanov. He came from behind to get a three-set win. 

Marton Fucsovics began the year ranked 40th but has slipped to 57th. He made a poor start to the year, winning just one of his first four matches. Better form came in February with a run to the last eight in Rotterdam and followed that up with a quarter final in Doha. Form has slipped again since and he lost in the last 64 of the Miami Masters to Carlos Alcaraz.  He also had to go to three sets in the first round of this tournament, beating Lloyd Hariis with the middle set being dropped. He's reached the fourth round at Roland Garros but has never made it past the second round in Monte Carlo. There have been two previous meetings between these players with the score level at 1-1. Perhaps significantly, the win for Schwartzmann was on clay in the 2019 French Open but it took him five sets. Back Schwartzmann to get the win.
