Marta Kostyuk, the 28th seed at this year’s Indian Wells event, will face the qualifier Taylor Townsend in the second round to begin her tournament. Marta Kostyuk is back on the tour after being out for more than a month with an ankle problem. The Ukrainian was last in action in January, where she lost in the first round at the Australian Open. Kostyuk, who is a former Indian Wells semi-finalist, had started the season in excellent form.

She won her opening four matches of the campaign, leading to a runner-up finish in Adelaide. The 23-year-old world number 28 defeated Townsend two seasons ago in Adelaide in their only other encounter.

Taylor Townsend has had a strong couple of weeks and will be confident of prolonging her stay here past this round. The American arrived in California after a runner-up finish in Austin.

It was her first final appearance on the tour. And though she did not win, she has used the momentum to make a strong start to the week.

Townsend is on a three-match winning streak and defeated Marie Bouzkova by the loss of just three games in the first round. Advancing to this round has catapulted Townsend nine places and up to 78th in the live ranking.
