Montpellier will be away to Marseille on Saturday seeking to claw further away from the relegation zone in the French Ligue 1. They currently sit 14th in the standings and trail ninth-paced Marseille by eight points. Marseille are coming off a 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk that allowed them to progress in the Europa League. The match was new head coach Jean-Louis Gasset’s first in charge and ended a run of seven successive games without a win. Marseille, who have amassed 30 points, will now seek to close the gap on the top six. They have won seven times and are six points adrift of the European places. Les Phocéens haven’t lost to Montpellier since 2018 and this will have them confident of coming out on top here. The first leg match, played in December ended in a 1-1 share of the spoils.

Montpellier boosted their survival hopes last weekend. Michel Der Zakarian’s men were 3-0 winners over Metz and ended a run of four games without a victory. Their fifth win of the season propelled them out of the relegation zone and they will be keen to keep this momentum going. La Paillade have now amassed 22 points and are separated from the two teams below them by goal difference. Though they have struggled, Montpellier have registered three of their five wins as the away team. They drew 1-1 the last time they were in Marseille and a similar result will be most appreciated.
