Two sides with contrasting PSL ambitions will face off on Tuesday evening when Mamelodi Sundowns play host to Richards Bay. The hosts currently lead the league standings, while the visitors are second-bottom. Sundowns look well on their way to clinching a record-extending 14th league title and head into this match with 46 points, leading second-placed Stellenbosch by 11 points. In addition, they have two games in hand on the sides below them. The Brazilians are the only side in the top flight that are still unbeaten after 18 league games, boasting a record of 14 wins and four draws. They played out a goalless draw away to Young Africans in the CAF Champions League over the weekend, extending their current unbeaten run to 16 matches in all competitions, including ten wins and six draws. Notably, Sundowns have been excellent in defence, keeping five clean sheets in their last six matches and conceding just three goals in their last ten. At home, the Brazilians have a record of seven wins and three draws this season. They beat this opponent 1-0 in the reverse fixture back in August and are clear favourites in this one. 

Meanwhile, Richards Bay are in real danger of dropping straight back to the First Division unless they can find some sort of form as we head into the run-in. They are on 14 points after 21 games and currently occupy the sole relegation playoff spot, just two points above Cape Town Spurs, who have started to notch a few important results recently. The Natal Rich Boys suffered their 13th loss of the season last weekend, beaten 2-1 by Golden Arrows on the road. That result extended their winless league run to five matches, including four losses and a draw. In away matches, the visitors are riding a six-match losing streak and have taken just five points from a possible 30 across the season. Richards Bay have lost each of their last three matches against this opponent dating back to January last year and failed to score a single goal against them in that time. It’s hard to make much of a case for them in this one.
