The eagerly-awaited CAF Champions League will kick off this week with Mamelodi Sundowns taking on Nouadhibou on Saturday afternoon. Sundowns qualified for this competition by winning the South African PSL last season. The Brazilians have begun this season in excellent form as well and currently lead their domestic league with a perfect record of eight wins in eight matches. With cup commitments, Sundowns have played four games fewer than the sides in second and third place, which gives them a massive advantage. Sundowns have been involved in AFL action over the last month and come into this match following a 2-0 home win over Wydad Casablanca before the international break. That result kept their unbeaten home record intact in all competitions this season, now with eight wins and a draw in nine matches. The hosts reached the semi-final of this competition last season and are the clear favourites to get off to a winning start in this campaign. 

Meanwhile, perennial Super D1 champions Nouadhibou qualified for the CAF Champions League after winning their sixth consecutive league title last season. They finished the season 19 points ahead of second-placed Chemal and are already leading the way this term. The visitors secured a 1-0 win away to Nouakchott King’s ahead of the international break, marking their third consecutive league win and ninth match in all competitions unbeaten. Nouadhibou beat Al Ahli Tripoli 2-1 on aggregate in the first round of qualifying before a 4-1 aggregate win over Real Bamako in round two. Notably, they failed to win either of the second legs in both those matches. The visitors are not only the outsiders in this match but are also the underdogs to qualify from this group for the next round.
