Maccabi Haifa will look to overturn the one-goal deficit from the first leg when they host Sheriff Tiraspol at the Sammy Ofer Stadium on Wednesday in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The winner of this two-legged tie will meet the winner of Slovan Bratislava and Zrinjski Mostar. The loser will be transferred to the Europa League Champions path third qualification round. Maccabi Haifa started their Champions League campaign in the first qualifying round this season. They defeated Hamrun Spartans 6-1 over aggregate but were beaten by a first-half goal in the reverse leg. In between, they had a win in the Israel Super Cup making it three wins and a loss across their last four matches. The Israelis have made it to the group stage of the Champions League three times before and as recently as last year. They have had a memorable 2-0 win over Juventus at this venue, but have lost six of their last nine in this competition.

Sheriff were in the Champions League group stage in 2021-22 season and are looking to repeat that performance. The Moldovans also started in the first qualification round and needed extra time in the second leg to overcome FCV Farul Constanta. The 1-0 defeat in the first leg of that fixture was Sheriff’s only loss across 16 matches in all competitions, stretching back to March. They haven’t really sparkled in the Champions League though, losing three of their last five games. It could be their away form that may decide the tie as Sheriff struggled on the road. They have been winless across six away games in this competition, drawing and losing three each.
