Last season's finalists, Lyon, open their 2025-26 Challenge Cup campaign welcoming Newcastle Red Bulls (formerly Newcastle Falcons) to Stade de Gerland on Saturday. Can the one-time champions edge the English side to kickstart their campaign on a winning note? Here is our prediction.
Lyon had a remarkable Challenge Cup campaign last season, dispatching Europe's best to reach the final. However, they fell short of what would have been their second Challenge Cup crown by losing 37-12 to Bath.
They haven't impressed domestically this season, losing six of their 11 Top 14 matches. This includes a 22-20 loss to Aviron Bayonne last week, marking their fourth defeat in five league games. Nevertheless, Karim Ghezal's side remains clear favorites to ace this match. They have won four of their five home matches this season, and their most recent four Challenge Cup home fixtures. Newcastle Red Bulls couldn't scale past the Challenge Cup group-stage last season. They finished bottom of Group 2 with an ugly-looking 0-0-4 record. The Newcastle-based outfit are also struggling with a poor run of form in their domestic league campaign this season. They have lost all six of their league games and are rock bottom of the standings.
