World number 54 Luciano Darderi and qualifier Taro Daniel will face off in the first round at the Lyon Open. The winner will then take on third seed Adrian Mannarino for a place in the quarter-finals. Luciano Darderi is coming off a semi-final run at the Turin Challenger. The Italian has been in exceptional form this season and is favourite to win this battle with Daniel. Playing predominantly on clay, Darderi has compiled a 23-12 record with all his wins coming on the surface. His excellence on clay resulted in a first-ever tour title when he triumphed in Cordoba in February. The win catapulted him into the ATP’s top 100 for the first time. Daniel began the season splendidly by reaching the Auckland final, his first tour final in six years. He has been unable to come close to such a run since. His run in Auckland was the only time he has managed to go past the second round this season. Daniel, who is currently ranked 81st in the live ranking, has lost in the first round eight times in 15 tournaments.
