Liverpool and Newcastle United will resume their Premier League duties after a night out in the Champions League on Wednesday. For this match, hosted by Liverpool, just like last in their midweek assignments, both teams will be eyeing three crucial points. Setbacks in the last round of league matches left these two sides outside the European football slots, and this will be another chance to push for that. Read on for our match prediction.
Liverpool suffered a late heartbreak last time out, leaving not just their title defence in shambles but also their chase for Champions League football. They enter this round placed sixth.
Newcastle United’s Premier League campaign has also been poor, and it didn’t get any better with their eighth defeat of the season last time out. Coming into this round, the Magpies are sitting ninth, and a loss here could see them drop to as low as 12th.

Liverpool - Newcastle: Form Analysis
Liverpool gave a befitting response to their late collapse over the weekend, thrashing Qarabag 6-0 at home in the Champions League. That confirmed their spot in the top eight. They will want to carry the same spirit back to the league, where their title defence has really been feeble.
The loss to Bournemouth last week was their seventh of the season. That’s already three more than last term, when the last two came after their title had been confirmed. Arne Slot’s men aren’t doing any better in defence either, having conceded 32 times in their 23 league games and being left with a +3 goal difference. That’s the lowest across the top six teams.
Liverpool are unbeaten against Newcastle in 18 league games.
Newcastle United also had their night out in the Champions League, facing the European champions PSG away in Paris. They survived an early penalty miss from their hosts but in the end needed a Joe Willock strike to steal a 1-1 draw.
That wasn’t enough to secure them a top eight finish, but it is a concern for another time. At the moment the focus is to avoid dropping out of the Premier League top 10. Eddie Howe’s men aren’t doing so great in that area, as they’ve failed to win any of their last two league games. The latest one was a 2-0 fall at home to Aston Villa, marking their eighth defeat of the campaign.

Liverpool & Newcastle Squad Analysis
Liverpool are expected to cope just fine even though they will miss a number of players in this match. Ibrahima Konate is out on compassionate leave, jeopardizing their targets for a first clean sheet in four league games. The Reds will, however, be happy to see Mohamed Salah back on the scoring sheet.
The Egyptian netted in the 6-0 rout of Qarabag, ending a nine-match wait for a goal at club level. He had earlier provided an assist in the Bournemouth loss, and such involvement in attack could be a pointer he is getting back to his best. In Liverpool’s last two home matches against Newcastle, Salah had four goal contributions.
Former Newcastle man Alexander Isak will miss this game as he recovers from a broken leg.
Newcastle United will also have a few key men ruled out here. Among them will be Brazilian midfielder Joelinton. The 29-year-old suffered a thigh injury in the loss to Aston Villa last weekend and had to miss the midweek match.
His return is set for mid-February, so this match comes too soon. The big miss for Newcastle, however, will be Fabian Schar. The defender is nursing an ankle injury and has so far missed five matches, with his return set for April. Newcastle have found it tough keeping clean sheets, and this will be another outing where they wish their defensive stalwart was available.

Our Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction
Liverpool have done league doubles on Newcastle United in five of the last seven seasons. They won’t be faulted for feeling they can do the same this season too. The first meeting went in the Reds’ favor, and they come into this game as slight favorites.
Playing at home will surely boost them, seeing that Newcastle have struggled a lot in their away games. Also, the Magpies have lost at Anfield in each of the last four EPL visits. Our prediction for Liverpool v Newcastle United is that Liverpool wins.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Alternative Predictions
Mohamed Salah to score or assist
Mohamed Salah is rediscovering his form after a slow start to the season, coupled with a public spat with his manager. The Egyptian returned from AFCON refreshed and has started in all their matches.
In the last two he had goal contributions and also had a good run against Newcastle the last two times Liverpool hosted this match. Salah has four goal involvements in Liverpool’s last two home games against Newcastle. As such, we are backing him to score or assist.
