Lille have a chance to rise into the top-three in Ligue 1 when they play host to Strasbourg on Sunday. They go into this game placed fourth, three points behind third placed Monaco, while Strasbourg are 10 points above the relegation playoff position. Lille are coming from a 2-1 win over Aston Villa but that wasn’t enough to keep them in the Conference League. They will now look to make amends with three points to aid their automatic Champions League qualification push. Their direct challengers in the top-three race, Brest and Monaco will meet next, and Lille will see the opportunity in this. Brest and Monaco play hours after Lille, giving them the chance to rise to third. In the reverse fixture, Lille suffered a 2-1 loss at Strasbourg and will feel this is a chance for revenge. Prior to that loss, they had posted four straight wins over Strasbourg. In their last nine matches, Lille have suffered just one defeat, a run that should give them confidence coming into this game. With their elimination from Europe, Lille can now focus fully on finishing in the top three. They are unbeaten in five league matches, winning three. However, one clean sheet only in the last six league matches should give them some concerns. The hosts will see much positivity in having scored in all their last nine matches. Quite remarkably, they’ve scored in each of their 21 home matches this season. In those 21 home matches, Lille lost just once – to Reims.

Strasbourg beat Lille for the first time in 11 matches in their last meeting, in December. They are targeting a second straight win here and will bank on their recent form. The visitors come here unbeaten in their last four matches, collecting 10 points from a possible 12. Their latest outing ended in a 3-1 win over Reims, the third time in four matches that they scored more than a goal. In the context of their push for survival, Strasbourg have done themselves a massive favor in those four matches. Lille will however be a tougher opponent and Strasbourg must be at their best. With 36 points, Strasbourg still need 14 points to guarantee survival. However, that is just theoretical for now, and the table will change a lot in the few weeks to come. As per their recent performances, it will take a serious dip for Strasbourg to drop into the red zone. While they are scoring with marked consistency, Strasbourg’s biggest worry at the moment will be in the few clean sheets they manage. In their last 18 matches, they have just two clean sheets. Strasbourg have also struggled away from home, winning only three of their 14 in the league this season.
