After deadlocks in the Australian Open and Dallas tournament, Learner Tien has turned the corner with a promising start to the Delray Beach Open. The American No. 4 saw off 83rd-ranked Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets, blasting 20 aces to win 6–4, 6–7(4–7), 7–6(7-5) to secure his berth in the quarterfinals.

As much as a morale booster, that result saw Tien rack up his sixth victory in eight matches. The California-born tennis youngster will also look to exact revenge, having lost his last and only encounter with Frances Tiafoe 3–0 at the US Open in 2023.

Frances Tiafoe began his Delray Beach Open with a round-of-32 victory over World No. 113 Rinky Hijikata, winning 6–4, 6–4 against the Australian. He also had the better of Zachary Svajda in Round 16, coming from behind to defeat the World No. 106 6–4, 3–6, 7–5 on Thursday. 

However, the former World No. 10 has posted an unconvincing 5–4 record in his last nine games, all on hard courts and is set for his biggest test against Learner Tien, who boasts a superior recent record on hard courts.
