Hubert Hurkacz has reached at least round four in all of the Grand Slams bar the US Open. The seventh seed attempts to make it past round two in New York for the first time. Here's our prediction of his match against Jordan Thompson.
For the past four years and five of the last six, Hurkacz has lost in round two of this hard court Grand Slam. The Pole is seventh in the live rankings but only 12th in the ATP Race.
He's reached the quarter-finals of the last two hard court tournaments he's played.In the Cincinnati Masters he had to retire from his quarter-final against Frances Tiafoe but looked fit in his first round match here.
Hurkacz beat qualifier Timofey Skatov in straight sets in round one. The second and third sets both went to a tie-break. Recent matches have seen him have to go to a final set to get the win. A close match with Thompson is likely.
Jordan Thompson just missed out on being seeded for this US Open. He's 32nd in the latest rankings but was a place lower when the seedings were decided. He's now 31st in the live rankings after his first round win.
He comfortably beat unseeded Constant Lestienne in straight sets and only lost six games. He's playing this tournament for the ninth time but only in 2020 when reaching round four has he got past this stage.
The Australian had a mixed build-up to this tournament. He got to the final in Atlanta and the last eight in Washington. In Montreal, he beat Jack Draper but only won two games against Alexander Zverev.
Injury forced him to pull out of Cincinnati but he looks ok now. We go for over 3.5 sets to be played.
