Jessica Pegula starts her Charleston title defence with a match against Yulia Putintseva in the second round. The two players will be facing off for the fourth time in their careers, with Pegula holding the head-to-head advantage. We have a prediction for this encounter below.

Pegula has beaten Putintseva in each of their three previous meetings, and the world number five arrives here in great shape. She has suffered only three defeats in her last 19 matches, all inflicted by world number two Elena Rybakina.

The remaining 16, she won, and comes here with a 19-4 record for the season. In her latest outing, Pegula has already claimed a tour title this season, winning in Dubai, and comes here placed sixth in the live rank. 

Putintseva has had trouble getting past the second round this season, and this will be another reason for her to worry. Four times out of five in 2026, she has fallen short at this stage, and that includes her last two events.

Ahead of this game, she beat Lulu Sun in straight sets, taking her Charleston record to 10-8. As a result, she starts this round 74th in the live rankings.

The Kazakh has, however, failed to win back-to-back matches since reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open in January. Last year her race here ended in the third round, but she has twice suffered defeat in the second round in Charleston.
