Top seed Jessica Pegula's Charleston Open campaign will see her play unseeded Magda Linette in the third round. Pegula is coming off a grueling second-round tie with Amanda Anisimova. The match lasted two hours and 26 minutes and saw Pegula come from a set down to win. This was her 10th win in 15 outings this season. Pegula is a strong performer on clay and has won over 100 matches on the surface in her career. She will be confident of adding to this as she has defeated Linette before. The American won in straight sets the only other time she faced the Pole. This was last season in Miami, a tournament she would go on to make the semifinals. The current world number five was a semifinalist in Charleston last year.

Magda Linette is having a strong start to her clay court campaign. She has won both matches she has played on the surface. After defeating Petra Martic in straight sets in the first round, Linette was forced to a decider in the last round. This was against 13th seed Dayana Yastremska. The Pole impressively bounced back after losing the first set 6-0 and dropped seven games in the final two sets. This was her fifth win of the season. She however remains on a losing record having lost nine times thus far. Linette lost in this very round in last season’s edition. She is currently up three places to 60th in the live ranking. The winner of this third-round tie will then play either Victoria Azarenka or Taylor Townsend in the quarters.
