Jessica Pegula began her Hertogenbosch campaign with a dominant straight-sets victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. She allowed the qualifier just four games in the contest and has now won her last three fixtures. This was the American’s season debut on grass and the win improved her record to 15-6. Pegula is a strong grasscourt player and will hope as the top seed she manages to make the final at the very least. The world number five is yet to play a championship match this year and has three times lost in the semi-finals.

Aleksandra Krunic has fared much worse than Pegula. The Serbian, who is playing here with a protected ranking, has compiled a shaky 13-10 record. She has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits. Before arriving to make her Hertogenbosch debut, Krunic had yet to win a main draw fixture this year. This changed with her come-from-behind three-set victory over the qualifier Jessika Ponchet in the first round. Advancing to this round has propelled Kruic, a former WTA top 40 player, a massive 56 places in the live ranking. She is now ranked 344th; another win will move her up 40 places.
