Two unseeded players face each other in the first round of the US Open. Roberto Carballes Baena faces qualifier Jan Choinski. Who will make it through to the last 64 of this hard court Grand Slam? Here's our match prediction.

The winner of this match will face either 27th seed Alexander Bublik or unseeded Juncheng Shang in round two. Baena is 55th in the live rankings and has reached the second round of this tournament six times in the last seven years.

He's never made it past round two though and the only time he's made it to the third round of a Grand Slam was at Roland Garros in 2020. The Spaniard comes into this tournament looking to end a run of three straight defeats.

His best results have come on clay but in January he did make it to the last eight in the Auckland hard court tournament. This US Open first round match is the first time he's faced Jan Choinski.

The 28-year-old Brit is playing in only his third Grand Slam main draw. The other two have both been at Wimbledon with a best of a second round in 2023. On both occasions he was given a wild card into the main draw.

This is the first time he's made it through the qualifiers after six previous failures. Choinski won two matches (one via his opponent retiring) before taking on Maxime Cressy in the final qualifying round.

He lost the first set of that match without winning a game. The next two were both won by a tie-break to take him into this main draw. Those wins have taken him to 276th in the live rankings but was as high as 126th last year.
