Unseeded Jakub Mensik is up against qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin in round one of the Brisbane International. For the winner, their next opponent will be either fifth seed Sebastian Korda or unseeded Arthur Cazaux. Here's our match prediction.
Mensik is a career-high 48th in the ATP rankings and that's 119 places higher than at the start of this year. He will want to begin 2025 as he did this year when winning the Challenger Tour event held in Canberra and then reaching the last 64 of the Australian Open.
The 19-year-old made it to the final of one ATP Tour event in 2024. That was in Qatar where he was eventually beaten by Karen Khachanov. Two quarter-finals were reached in September and October but his most recent tournament saw him lose his three group matches in the Next Gen Finals.
Mikhail Kukushkin is ranked 113th and had to win two qualifying matches to reach this main draw in Brisbane. He turned 37 on Boxing Day but defeated Andrea Collarini and Tristian Schoolkate (both in straight sets) to qualify.
2024 saw him win two Challenger Tour events in the first three months and that included a win over Mensik. He hasn't been able to repeat that form since and we tip Mensik to win in straight sets.
