by Sridhar Bhamidi in AFCON Predictions
Defending champions Ivory Coast will start their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a matchday one fixture against surprise package Mozambique. This Group F match on Wednesday between the Elephants and the Mambas comes with our prediction of Ivory Coast -1 European Handicap. Cameroon and Gabon are the other teams in this group, where Ivory Coast are expected to be among the top two sides, while Mozambique could be the surprise package.
Retaining the title could be top of Ivory Coast's agenda, but no team has done so since Egypt in 2010 in the AFCONs! With trickier games against Cameroon and Gabon awaiting, the Elephants can't afford to drop points here and complicate their progress.
Mozambique have had five successive eliminations at the group stage in the AFCON finals, so they would be starting with very little ambition. That won't stop them from being an underdog, and they could relish being a stubborn opponent. Can the defending champions start their tournament with three points, or will Mozambique have a say in the group standings with a surprise result? Côte d'Ivoire - Mozambique: Form Analysis
Ivory Coast qualified for the AFCON finals by finishing second in their qualification group behind Zambia. They had four wins out of six (L2) and were just a point behind the eventual group winners. The Elephants come here with five wins out of their last seven games (D1, L1), including friends.
That run included a 2-0 win over Oman in the most recent friendly, although they were beaten 1-0 by Saudi Arabia just prior. Outside the friends, with five wins out of their last seven international games (D1, L1), Ivory Coast are likely to be confident of their chances here.
Ivory Coast won five of their seven matches against Mozambique (D2).
The last of those took place in 2021, and Mozambique will lay claim to improved results since then. They qualified for Morocco by finishing second in Group I of the qualifiers behind Mali with 11 points (W3, D2, L1).
Recent form hasn't been encouraging, though, as Mozambique lost two and drew one of their warm-up friends. That included a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Angola in the most recent match, raising concerns over their preparations.

Côte d'Ivoire & Mozambique Squad Analysis
Ivory Coast received a big blow ahead of their tournament opener, as Sebastien Haller has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The Elephants have called up Aston Villa forward Evann Guessand in his place.
They are likely to stick to an aggressive 4-3-3 formation, although a slightly compact 4-2-3-1 can't be ruled out. Either way, the wings will be manned by Amad Diallo of Manchester United and Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig.
Jean-Philippe Krasso scored in Ivory Coast's latest win over Oman.
Mozambique come here with their regular squad member Clesio omitted for technical reasons, while forward Pepo is ruled out after sustaining a knee injury. The likes of David Malembana, Shaquille, and Amadu are missing from their previous AFCON squad.
The Mambas have usually featured in a 4-2-3-1 formation but may stick to a more defensive 5-3-2 system to frustrate their famous opponents. Stanley Ratifo could be leading the line, while Witi could be looking to provide support on counter-attacks.
