Ivory Coast - Guinea-Bissau: Form Analysis
Ivory Coast come into their home tournament as the third favourites behind Morocco and Senegal. The Elephants will be starting their journey to win the coveted AFCON title for the third time in their history. They accomplished the historic feat for the first time in 1992 and had to wait 23 years until they earned their second title in 2015. Since then, the hosts seemed to have fallen off the radar but have re-emerged in recent years thanks to their robust recruitment. Ivory Coast had the perfect preparation run leading up to the competition. They are on a three-match winning streak, which included a 5-1 win over Sierra Leone in a warm-up game and a 9-0 demolition of the Seychelles in their first 2026 World Cup qualifier. Ranked ninth among African countries according to FIFA, the hosts are heavily fancied to get the tournament started with a victory.
Meanwhile, ranked 25th among African nations, Guinea-Bissau head to Ebimpe as the lowest-ranked team in Group B. However, it would be unfair to write them off just yet. The African Wild Dogs were very impressive in qualifying for AFCON 2024, finishing second only behind Nigeria. They managed 13 points in their six matches, just two fewer than the Super Eagles while holding off Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe. Since then, Guinea-Bissau have remained unbeaten in their two competitive matches. They held Burkina Faso to a 1-1 draw and beat Djibouti 1-0, both in World Cup qualifying. However, with a rotated squad, they were taken apart by Mali 6-2 in their sole warm-up game last weekend.

Ivory Coast & Guinea-Bissau Squad Analysis
Ivory Coast have a team laden with international talent; however, Jean-Louis Gasset opted not to select former Manchester United duo Wilfried Zaha and Eric Bailly. Other Premier League stars that were left behind were Maxwel Cornet of West Ham United and Man United prospect Amad Diallo. Gasset may now find himself in a difficult position as reports in the week have suggested that Borussia Dortmund frontman Sebastian Haller and winger Simon Adingra may miss the opener due to an ankle and hamstring injury, respectively.
Guinea-Bissau will have to make do without the services of central midfielder Janio Bikel, who is suffering from an unspecified injury. Nanu is flagged as a doubt but could still feature in the match if passed fit by the team’s medical staff. Mama Balde is likely to spearhead the African Wild Dogs with the help of SV Zulte Waregem forward Zinho Gano.
