Iran meets the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Tuesday’s 2023 AFC Asian Cup top-of-the-group contest. Going into the game, Iran sit at the summit of Group C with six points thus far while UAE are two points and a place below them. Iran have already sealed a ticket to the Round of 16 while a victory for UAE will also confirm their place in the knockouts. Three-time Asian Cup champions Iran have posted a 100% start in the tournament having beaten Hong Kong and Palestine. A Ghayedi Mahdi 24th-minute strike was enough to earn them all three points in their last encounter against Hong Kong. Ghayedi has been instrumental for Iran in the tournament having scored in both opening games. The 1976 champions are in impeccable form heading into the UAE game having gone undefeated in their last 15 games. The impressive run has seen them draw only two games and win the other 13.

UAE have had a mixed start to the tournament having thumped Hong Kong 3-1 but drew one-all against Palestine last time out. Alamiri Sultan opened the scoring for UAE against Palestine but a red card to Al Hammadi Khalifa for a last-man tackle hamstrung them. Luckily for UAE, Tamer Seyam missed his spot kick but an own goal by Bader Naser earned a point for Palestine. The 1996 Asian Cup finalists will be looking to make it three semi-final appearances in consecutive tournaments. UAE will face a tall order to qualify as the group winners having done so only twice before in the 10 editions participated in.
