Inter Milan were the losing finalists last season and host Benfica in this 2023-24 Champions League Group D fixture. Both sides are looking for their first win in the group which also includes RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad. Inter drew their opening group fixture 1-1 at Real Sociedad, conceding early but equalizing in the 87th minute. The Black and Blues are currently top of Serie A but only on goal difference from Milan. Six of their seven league games have been won with 19 goals scored. The weekend saw them in fine form with a 4-0 win at Salernitana with all the goals being scored by Martinez. He's in top form with nine league goals this season and he scored the equalizer in Sociedad. Inter have won four of their last five home Champions League games. The other was a 3-3 draw with Benfica in last season's quarter finals but Inter had won the away first leg 2-0. The club with the wonderful nickname 'The Well-Cherished One' will be out to win against Benfica this time around.

Benfica have work to do after being beaten 2-0 at home by RB Salzburg in their opening group fixture. They certainly won't want to lose their second game too but that does look a distinct possiblity. Benfica are second in the Primera League, a point behind leaders Sporting Lisbon. Friday saw them get a big 1-0 home win over Porto and they remain unbeaten in their domestic league. In the Champions League, Benfica are without a win in three games. On the road, they have gone ten games without a defeat in the Champions League but that record could well end here.
