While the record books may credit the franchise with the 1979 title, true Oklahoma City Thunder fans agree that Championship belongs to the Seattle SuperSonics. This, then, is OKC’s shot at glory under their own banner.
After trailing twice in this series by Game 3, the Thunder have now taken the series lead for the first time following a commanding 120-109 victory in Game 5 on Monday night at the Paycom Center.
OKC’s defence, which has been the cornerstone of their success this season, was incredible in the last match. They notched up 15 steals and forced the Pacers into 22 turnovers, while draining 14 threes on 43.8% shooting.

The Indiana Pacers have made something of a habit of pulling off comebacks in the postseason. However, they have struggled to do so in the last two games, with the Thunder seeming to have figured out how to get the job done.
One of the criticisms of Indiana in this series had been their tendency to start slowly, which was the case in Game 5 when they allowed 32 points in Q1 and were down 15 by halftime.
On the positive, though, the Pacers out-rebounded the Thunder by five and scored six more points inside the paint. However, they were nowhere close to producing the type of defensive output Oklahoma delivered.

In Game 5, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put up his customary 30+ points, doing so for the fourth time in five games in this series.
SGA also got two steals in Game 5. OKC have now managed 239 steals in the playoffs - 23 more than any other team in the 52 seasons that steals have been recorded in the league.
However, the star of the Thunder's Game 5 victory was Jalen Williams, who scored a Playoff career-best 40 points on 14 of 24 shooting from the field.
SGA and Williams combined to score or assist on 103 points in Game 5 - the most by a duo in an NBA Finals game in five decades!
For the Pacers, Pascal Siakam led the scoring with 28 points in Game 5 but was well-marshalled by OKC’s defence, which forced him to commit six turnovers.
However, he struggled for support, especially after Tyrese Haliburton suffered a calf strain, which visibly affected his movement and finishing on the night. Indiana’s point guard ended the match with just four points, seven rebounds, and six assists in 34 minutes - a far cry from his usual production during the postseason.
Reports after the game suggested that Haliburton’s injury would likely keep him sidelined for up to two weeks, but he has made it clear that as long as he is able to walk, he will play.
It is worth noting, though, Haliburton’s preparation for Game 6 has largely been limited to watching tape and light shooting exercises.
