Southampton were due to be playing in this Championship play-off final but have been disqualified for spying.on their semi-final opponents Middlesbrough. Boro have been reinstated and now take on Hull City in an evenly matched final at Wembley. Our prediction is an exciting game with both teams scoring.

Middlesbrough believed their dream of returning to the Premier League was over for another season. They were beaten in the semi-finals by the Saints but then the Spygate scandal was revealed.  Now they are back in with a chance of promotion which looked unlikely after a disappointing end to the season.

Hull City had to win their last match of the main season to qualify for the play-offs. The Tigers then beat Millwall in the play-off semi-finals and have this chance to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017. Can they cope with all the upheaval caused by seeing their opponents changed this week?

Hull - Middlesbrough: Form Analysis

Just like their opponents, Middlesbrough last played in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season. This term has seen them challenging for promotion throughout but they slipped down from the top two, eventually finishing fifth in the Championship,

Can Boro make the most of their reprieve?

They were four points behind the final automatic promotion place but eight above Hull City. Boro only earned 19 points from their last 15 league fixtures and then lost to Southampton 2-1 in the play-off semi-final. They have gone three games without a win, drawing two of those matches.

Three of their last four matches have seen both teams score and that stat has come up in six out of nine.. Ten of their last 12 away fixtures have seen both teams get on the scoresheet. They lost 1-0 at home to Hull last December but Boro had won the three previous fixtures. Both teams have scored in six of their last eight meetings.

Hull City just pipped Wrexham for a place in these play-offs. The Tigers won on the last day to clinch sixth place in the table. That took them into a play-off semi-final against Millwall and after a goalless draw at home in the first leg, they beat the Lions 2-0 away from home..

City are unbeaten in their last three games but before that final day win over Norwich City, they had gone six games without a victory. The win at Millwall is their only away win in six matches. Five of their last seven games have seen both teams score.

Hull & Middlesbrough Squad Analysis

It's been a strange week for both of these clubs. Hull City had been preparing for a final against Southampton before the Saints were disqualified. Middlesbrough thought their season was over but like a lucky loser in tennis, here they are facing their biggest match of the season.

Middlesbrough's form in the final part of the season has not been that of a promotion-winning team. For the last ten games of the main season, they were down at 16th in the form table. Hull were only 12th though so you can see the two sides are closely matched at present.

Tommy Conway will be missing this game but Hayden Hackney is expected to be back.

Massive improvement by the Tigers this season.

Hull City only finished a place above the relegation zone last season. This term has been a revelation for them and the Tigers have Oli McBurnie to thank for their improvement. He's scored 17 league goals this season and also made seven assists.

Boro will also need to keep an eye on Joe Gelhardt who has 15 league goals to his name  He had gone four without a goal before scoring in the second leg of their play-off semi-final at Millwall. They are possiblyle  going to be without Kyle Joseph for this match.

Our Hull vs Middlesbrough Prediction

This is considered to be the most valuable game in football. The winners will be promoted to the Premier League but this isn't the final we were expecting to see. Hull City thought it's be Southampton that they would be facing on Saturday but then the scandal broke and in came Middlesbrough.

Neither of these two clubs ended the season in great form. Hull struggled to clinch sixth place but did well to get past Millwall in the semi-finals. Middlesbrough were in contention for automatic promotion but only finished fifth. Our main Hull v Middlesbrough prediction is BTTS.
