The fourth-seed Houston Dynamo play host to eighth-seeded Sporting Kansas City for the Western Conference semi-final. The winner of this matchup will advance to take on either the Seattle Sounders vs LAFC in the conference final. The Dynamo are the favorites to advance in large part due to their home field advantage. They’ve been fantastic at the Shell Energy Stadium this season, accumulating a 12-5-2 record in front of the home fans this season. Houston played out an extremely close first round matchup with Real Salt Lake which included two penalty shootouts over the three games. They come into this conference semi-final matchup off the back of two straight 1-1 draws in regulation time. The Dynamo have not been beaten in 90 minutes for eight consecutive matches, with their last defeat actually coming away to Sporting KC 2-1 back in September. 

Sporting KC entered the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the league. The visitors swept top-seeded St. Louis City in the first round, winning the first two games for an aggregate score of 6-2. The triumph has Sporting KC as the lowest-seeded team still remaining in the competition. It also extends their current spectacular run of having appeared in the conference semi-finals in four of the last six MLS Cup Playoff editions. They recovered after a nightmarish start which saw them with seven losses, zero wins and three draws after their first 10 MLS fixtures. Since the end of the Leagues Cup tournament, SKC have racked up eight wins in 12 matches. This includes their current streak of five unbeaten, four of which have resulted in victories. Peter Vermes’ men have also been able to improve their away form where they have won in three of the last four road trips.
