Third seed Katie Boulter begins her Nottingham Open title defence against unseeded compatriot Harriet Dart. They will battle in the first round with the winner playing Viktorija Golubic or a yet-to-be-determined qualifier next. Harriet Dart is back in Nottingham for a fifth time and fourth successive season. She has made the quarter-finals in each of her last two appearances and she will be keen to set a new record. Dart, who has lost five of six meetings with Boulter, lost to her countrywoman last year. The 27-year-old is having a topsy-turvy campaign and has had a torrid recent few weeks. She has lost six of her last seven matches and has now compiled a 16-16 record. Dart is coming off a second-round exit in the ITF grass tournament in London which marked her season debut on grass. The Brit has dropped two places in the live ranking to 92nd.

Katie Boulter won the title here in exquisite fashion. The 27-year-old, playing as a wildcard, secured her maiden tour crown without losing a set in the tournament. Returning here will rekindle the memories of her triumph and hopefully be a turnaround after a rough few weeks. Boulter has lost six of her last 10 fixtures and is currently on a two-match skid. The Briton wrapped up a difficult clay court season that saw her lose five of eight matches, with a first-round exit at the French Open. A three-set defeat to Paula Badosa marked her 10th defeat in 26 outings this year. Though she did struggle on clay, Boulter still managed to continue her dominance in this fixture with Dart. She won their most recent encounter in straight sets at the WTA 125k in Paris. This was her fifth win against Dart and all five have been by straight sets. Boulter, who triumphed in San Diego earlier this year for her second tour title, has dropped to 30th in the live ranking.
