The 2024 Currie Cup is finally here! Kicking off this year’s tournament will be Griquas taking on the Pumas at Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley on Friday afternoon.

Griquas will enter this year’s competition hoping for a better run than they managed in the previous edition. Last year, they finished second-bottom with a record of seven wins, one draw and six losses in their 14 games. While that was not the worst return, the major issue the side faced was the lack of bonus points earned.

Across the 14 matches last term, Griquas took just five bonus points, which was the fewest of any side in the competition and if they had earned just three more, they would have been in the top four equation. At home, the Peacock Blues won four of their seven matches last season but were beaten 27-17 by this opponent at this venue in the final week of the group stage. 

Meanwhile, Pumas will be setting off on their quest to win back the Currie Cup title after they were forced to relinquish it to the Free State Cheetahs last season.

The Pumas finished third during the group stage last term and went on to beat the Sharks 26-20 in Durban in the semi-final. Unfortunately, they were unable to do likewise a week later in the Free State where they suffered a 25-17 loss to finish as runners-up. Over the course of last term, the Pumas recorded eight wins and six losses, earning eight points in their 14 group-stage fixtures.

Notably, though, they had the best points difference of any side in the competition (144) 29 more than the cup winners the Cheetahs. The Pumas won four of their seven away games last season and also beat this opponent home and away.
