Grigor Dimitrov, 18th seed, will seek his first win against 22nd seed Nicolas Jarry when they battle on Friday in Shanghai. The winner of this quarterfinal will then proceed to play either fifth seed Andrey Rublev or 32nd seed Ugo Humbert. Grigor Dimitrov earned his fifth top-10 win of the season in the last round as he defeated world number two Carlos Alcaraz in three sets. He bounced back from a set down to win and in so doing equaled his best-ever result here. This will have him confident of finally getting one over Jarry in what is their third meeting. Dimitrov has compiled a 36-18 record and is now through to his eighth quarterfinal of the season. The Bulgarian has progressed past this round four times already and has made it all the way to a final once. Winning his 15th match in 24 outings on hard courts has moved him up one place to 18th in the live ranking.

Nicolas Jarry has won both previous meetings with Dimitrov with the latest coming back in May at the Geneva Open final. Both matches were however played on clay, a surface that Jarry has had considerably more success than Dimitrov. A change in surface will however not deter him from fancying a third victory here as he has been dominant on hard courts. Jarry has won 14 of the 20 matches he has played on hard courts. He defeated the wildcard Diego Schwartzman in three sets in the last round. The win, which bumped him up to 21st in the live ranking, also saw him record his best-ever result at a Masters 1000. Jarry has compiled a 41-18 record and has won three of the six quarterfinals he has contested.
