The bottom side in the Currie Cup, the Griffons, will take on the sixth-placed GWK Griquas on Saturday afternoon at North Harbour Stadium. Seven of the eight teams involved in the tournament are still in with a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, with 16 points separating the leaders and the side in seventh. The Griffons are the only side that cannot qualify for the knockout rounds, while the Griquas are just four points behind the top four. The hosts have managed just one win in this year’s competition and have gotten to their nine-point tally thanks to five bonus points picked up over their ten matches. They currently sit at the foot of the Currie Cup standings this year, 13 points behind the second-from-bottom Blue Bulls. The Griffons lost at this venue 25-21 to Western Province last weekend, marking their sixth consecutive defeat and ninth of the tournament. While they cannot qualify for the knockout stages from here, the hosts will want to cause a few upsets over the next few matches, though they may find it difficult in this one. 

The Griquas come into this match after being taken apart 40-20 by the Blue Bulls last week, allowing Western Province and the Golden Lions to overtake them in the standings. The visitors are now on 24 points, 14 behind the leaders and just two above the Bulls in seventh. Griquas have recorded five wins and five losses in their ten matches but currently have the lowest bonus point return of any side with three. The visitors have been unable to put a sustained run of good results together in this tournament. They’ve lost three of their five away matches, which included a 24-6 thumping by the Natal Sharks in their last match on the road. However, the Griquas did win the reverse fixture convincingly in week seven of the tournament and will be expected to come out on top here as well.
