World number 94 Thanasi Kokkinakis will play the qualifier Gregoire Barrere in the first round at the Romanian Open. Barrere is making his debut in Bucharest and so far so good for the Frenchman. He started his campaign in the qualifying rounds and advanced to the main draw having won both matches in straight sets. The 30-year-old will hope to have gained enough momentum as he bids to turn his season around. Barrere has struggled to win matches so far and has lost more than he has won. He has compiled an 8-12 record and has been defeated three times in seven outings on clay. Barrere, who has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits, has one main draw win in the former. He is ranked 128th in the ATP.
Thanasi Kokkinakis is in hot form at the moment and will be confident of making a winning start here. The Australian is coming off a title run in Sarasota in the challenger circuit. He also has a head-to-head advantage over Barrere thanks to his win at the St. Tropez Challenger in 2021. Kokkinakis has had a topsy-turvy season and has won just three more matches than the 10 he has lost. On clay, however, he has excelled and has compiled a 5-1 record on the surface. The 28-year-old arrives here having moved up two places in the live ranking to 92nd. From here, the winner will play third seed Sebastian Korda for a place in the quarterfinals.
