Week three in the 2024 Currie Cup kicks off with the Golden Lions playing host to Griquas on Friday afternoon. The hosts are second in Pool B of the competition, while the visitors are bottom of the pool standings.

The Lions kept their 100% winning record intact last week when they travelled to Mpumalanga to face the Pumas. They put in a remarkable away performance to secure a whopping 75-21 victory, marking their biggest away win of the last two seasons. 

Sam Francis made a dream debut for the Lions, opening the scoring with two penalties before running in the first try of the afternoon. The Johannesburg side were relentless from then on, finishing the match with an incredible 10 tries in total to take the maximum five points from the game. 

The hosts will now look to exact their revenge on this opponent, having lost both home and away to them in last season’s competition. 

Meanwhile, Griquas picked up their first win of the competition in fine style, fighting back from 24-7 down at the halftime break to clinch a dramatic 34-31 victory over the Sharks in Kimberley last weekend. 

After a lacklustre first 40, Griquas emerged from the tunnel in the second period clearly rejuvenated and were driven to victory by former BlitzBok Sako Makata, who despite not scoring, played a huge role in setting up two tries while remaining a menace carrying the ball. 

Lubabalo Dobela held his nerve in the dying moments to kick a clutch penalty to give the side from the Northern Cape their first win of the competition.
