It’s time for the semi-finals of the 2025 Currie Cup Premier Division, and Saturday’s double-header kicks off at Ellis Park Stadium with the Golden Lions at home against the Boland Cavaliers. The Lions ended this season top of the table, while the Cavaliers finished fourth. Check out our match prediction below!
After their heartbreaking loss to the Sharks in last season’s final, the Lions have bounced back in style this year and are well on course to win the Currie Cup for the first time since 2015. Thanks to their performance in the group stage, the Johannesburg outfit have home advantage here as well as in the final - if they get there!
For Boland, 2025 has been a year of resurgence, having battled their way back to the Currie Cup elite after an almost decade-long absence. The hosts are the favourites in this contest, but the visitors are armed with the belief that this could be their fairytale campaign. Let’s get into the key stats!

Fidelity ADT Lions - Sanlam Boland Kavaliers: Form Analysis
The Golden Lions were the standout side during the group stage of this competition, earning 26 points from their seven games (W5 L2), while securing a top-four finish with a game to spare.
Mzwakhe Nkosi’s side earned top spot in the table last weekend, scoring 22 points in the second half without conceding en route to a commanding 37-7 victory over Griquas here at Ellis Park.
The Lions have a perfect four wins from four home matches this season and scored 35+ points in each victory, while they only conceded double digits in one of those games.
However, the Cavaliers beat the Lions 29-10 when they met last month!
That victory was the start of a three-match win streak for the Boland Cavaliers and effectively earned them a spot in the knockout rounds, as they lost their final two games in the group.
Last week, Boland were comprehensively beaten 40-22 by bottom side Western Province on the road, which followed a narrow 33-31 defeat to the Sharks in Durban a week earlier.
Hawies Fourie’s men lost three of their four away games this season and conceded 25+ points in each match. They were beaten 60-12 the last time they faced this opponent at this venue in this competition.

Fidelity ADT Lions & Sanlam Boland Kavaliers Squad Analysis
Given their solid display against Griquas, Mzwakhe Nkosi has opted to retain the same 23-man squad that stepped out last week, led by the in-form PJ Botha in the front row.
Chris Smith has been a key player for the Lions since returning to South Africa from French club Oyonnax, and the veteran fly-half picked up 12 points off the boot against Griquas.
Player of the Tournament at the U20 World Championships, Haashim Pead, will start on the bench for the home side, though he will almost certainly have a role to play in the second half.
Will James Tedder and Aslon Davids make a mark against their former employers?
Both former Lions’ players missed the trip to Western Province through injury, but they are straight back into the starting lineup at full-back and scrum-half, respectively, this week.
However, Hawies Fourie received a double injury blow as well in the lead-up to this match, with Donovan Don (thigh) and Wayrin Losper (shoulder) both ruled out.
Don’s absence is particularly significant, as he has scored 40 points this season and is the joint-leading try-scorer in the competition with eight. Jaydon Bantom will replace Don on the left wing.

Our Fidelity ADT Lions vs Sanlam Boland Kavaliers Prediction
The Lions look determined to bring their 10-year wait to lift the Currie Cup to an end, and they enter this match with good momentum after dismantling the Griquas at this venue last week.
While Boland beat this opponent at home last month, they have struggled to find the same level of performance on the road this season. The Cavaliers have punched above their weight this year, and we feel their journey will come to an end at Ellis Park. Our Lions vs Boland Cavaliers prediction is Lions -15.5.
