Girona will look to keep their hold of La Liga leadership when they host Deportivo Alavés in the last match of this matchday. This matchday 17 will be played at the Estadi Montilivi in Girona on Monday. Ahead of this round, the hosts are top of the leader board with 41 points and the visitors are 13th after Saturday’s matches with 16 points. The hosts have a two-point lead over Real Madrid, who play before Girona and could go above to claim the top spot by the time this match starts. Girona will be confident though, of reclaiming the honours as they are hot on form after a 4-2 win over Barcelona last matchday. That made it seven wins out of their last eight matches in La Liga, with only a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao the exception. That draw came at this venue though, which was again their lone exception in their last four home league matches.

Alavés remain only three points above the bottom-three giving them jitters of being dragged into relegation dogfight. They are coming off a 1-0 loss to Las Palmas which was their third defeat across six league games, winning just once. Surprisingly though, they have lost consecutive league matches only once in this campaign. That could be a sign of their bouncebackability, which may make things tricky for the hosts. Alavés have certainly kept things tight at the back with only 20 goals conceded so far, only seven teams conceding fewer than them. That said, five defeats and three draws over their last eight away league matches suggest they could be struggling impact on this trip.
