World Matchplay action continues on Wednesday evening with Gian van Veen taking on compatriot Wessel Nijman in Round 2. Both these players have won a game each of their two encounters this season, and our prediction is that this match could go down to the wire.
Gian van Veen reached the quarter-final here in Blackpool last year, and kicked off his 2026 World Matchplay campaign with an impressive 10-6 victory over Krzysztof Ratajski on Sunday.
The Giant averaged 93.55 and pinned just one 180 in that match, both lower than the Polish Eagle, but he was excellent on the outer ring, converting 66.67% (10/15) of his checkout attempts.
Van Veen has won seven of his last 10 matches in all competitions, which included reaching the quarter-final of the Players Championship 24 at the start of this month.
Meanwhile, Wessel Nijman has been one of the most improved players in world darts over the past year, and he got his World Matchplay campaign started with a 10-5 victory over Dave Chisnall.
The 26-year-old Dutchman pinned two maximums and maintained a solid 98.63 average in his opening match. He converted 52.63% of his checkout attempts and a highest checkout of 117.
Nijman has also won seven of his last 10 matches in all competitions, but has lost five of his last six against his upcoming opponent.
