The quarter-final of the World Matchplay brings us Gian van Veen taking on James Wade on Thursday evening. The Machine has won three of his last four matches against the giants, which sees us leaning toward the value on the underdog here for our main prediction.
After making fairly light work of Krzysztof Ratajski in Round 1, Gian van Veen had to produce his best to beat Wessel Nijman 14-12 in a thrilling second-round contest on Wednesday night.
In the last round, the Giant was outdone by his compatriot in both three-dart average (96.95) and 180s (four), but he maintained an impressive checkout rate (50%) and recorded the highest checkout of the match (148).
Van Veen has won eight of his last 10 matches in all competitions, but only won two of his five encounters against his upcoming opponent last year.
Meanwhile, following his runner-up run last year, James Wade kicked off his 2026 campaign with a 10-7 victory over Jermaine Wattimena before seeing off Ryan Searle 11-8 last night.
The Machine averaged 99.85, including four 180s against the Rockster. He also converted 50% of his checkout attempts and recorded two 100+ finishes, including a 143 highest checkout.
Wade has won six of his last 10 matches in all competitions.

Our Gian van Veen vs James Wade Prediction
While Gian van Veen is through to the last eight, he has not shown the type of explosive scoring we know he is capable of , and managed to get past Nijman despite having a lower three-dart average last night.
James Wade, on the other hand, had little difficulty against Wattimena and Searle in the opening rounds. The veteran has managed to control the tempo of matches exquisitely in this competition, and we feel he has the edge in this one. Our Gian van Veen vs James Wade prediction is James Wade +2.5.
