Germany will get their 2024 Paris Olympics Handball campaign underway on Saturday when they take on Sweden. The Germans currently rank fourth in the 2024 World Rankings, while the Bengan Boys are ranked third. Here’s our opening match prediction.
The Germans qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games by finishing second behind Croatia in their group at the 2024 IHF Men's Olympic Qualification Tournaments. In their three qualification matches they managed two wins, beating Austria and Algeria.
Alfred Gislason’s side are now set to feature in their 12th Games and 11th in a row since 1972 when they hosted the tournament. Over the years, Germany have earned one gold, two silvers and a bronze.
Germany had a solid warm-up campaign, winning their last three matches against world number-one France, as well as Hungary and Japan. However, they were beaten by this opponent in mid-May 34-28.
Meanwhile, Sweden secured their qualification for the Olympics by finishing third in the 2024 EHF European Men's Handball Championship, where they beat this opponent 34-31 to claim the bronze.
The Bengan Boys are poised to make their 16th Olympic Games appearance this year and 14th on the bounce since 1972. During that time they have accumulated four silver medals in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2012.
The Swedes won both their warmup matches in the lead-up to the competition and hold a record of seven wins in their last 10 matches in all competitions. Additionally, they are on a five-match winning streak against this opponent and are unbeaten in their last eight encounters.
