The 2025 World Cup of Darts gets underway on Thursday in Frankfurt, and in the first round, we will see the host nation Germany taking on Portugal. Germany are the number seven seed, while Portugal are unseeded. Let’s get into the match prediction.
Germany will be looking for a better performance in front of their home crowd this year after bowing out of the competition in round two in the last edition.
Martin Schindler, ranked number 18 according to the PDC Order of Merit, returns for the host nation this year, and he is joined by Ricardo Pietreczko, who is ranked 29th.
Germany beat New Zealand 4-3 and Finland 4-1 last year before losing to Northern Ireland. Schindler has a 6-4 record in his last 10 matches, while Pietreczko is 7-3.
Portugal are set to feature in their sixth consecutive World Cup this year but have yet to progress beyond the second round. They were ousted by Italy last year.
Jose de Sousa is back for another year, having featured in every edition so far. He is ranked 51st according to the PDC Order of Merit and is joined by unranked Bruno Nascimento.
Portugal beat the USA 4-2 last year before losing to Italy 4-3. Nascimento earned his spot in the competition by winning the Portuguese Qualifier.

Germany enter the first round as massive favourites and will have the home crowd behind them, which will give them a massive lift for this match. They have also brought in Ricardo Pietreczko, who will be making his World Cup debut.
