Germany will take on Japan in an international friendly at Volkswagen Arena this Saturday. While most European nations are contesting the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers this week, Germany have gained automatic qualification since they are the host nation. However, they will need the tune-up matches, as their form has been far from what most have come to expect from a German National team. The hosts lost their last two matches back in June to Poland and Colombia without scoring in either match. They were knocked out in the group stages of the FIFA World Cup last year and have won only one of their five friendly matches since then while losing three and drawing one. The Germans also had an unimpressive Nations League tournament, where they finished third in their group with just one win in their six matches. Despite their poor form, though, the hosts can never be completely counted out of any match, and they are the current bookmakers' favourite to win this one. 

Meanwhile, Japan will be looking to use this match in preparation for the AFC World Cup qualifiers scheduled to get underway later this year. The visitors are drawn in Group B, which includes North Korea and Syria, and they are firmly expected to win the group. Japan come into this match following consecutive wins back in June, beating El Salvador 6-0 and Peru 4-1. They were excellent during the World Cup group stages, where they topped their group, which included this opponent. However, they were beaten on penalties by Croatia in the first knockout round. Over their last six competitive matches, Japan have only lost once, and they also beat this opponent 2-1 in that time. The visitors are ranked 20th by FIFA, five places below Germany, and are the underdogs in this fixture.
