Third seed Frances Tiafoe makes his first appearance of the season and will battle unseeded Miomir Kecmanovic in Hong Kong. The two will square off in the second round with the winner playing either Juncheng Shang or Botic van de Zandschulp next. Frances Tiafoe is coming off a strong 2023 campaign that saw him end the year ranked 16th in the ATP. He compiled a 40-21 record and also cracked the top 10 for the first time during the season. The American, who compiled a 21-10 record on hard courts, won two titles. He has defeated Kecmanovic three of the four times they have met with two of his wins coming on hard courts.

Miomir Kecmanovic had a torrid 2023 season and finished with a losing record for only the second time in his career. He compiled a 28-31 record and lost 13 of 24 fixtures on hard courts. But as he has started things off here with a win, he will be confident of riding the momentum past this round. The Serb defeated Taro Daniel in straight sets in the first round and lost five games in the match. Kecmanovic finished last season ranked 54th in the ATP. Despite his struggles, he did manage to contest two finals and play in the semifinals in a further three tournaments.
